SCHOOL VISITS
“Back to School” Program
The Back to School Program is the Seventh District Court of Appeals’ educational outreach program. It has been well received in many high schools.
It provides high school students in Belmont, Carroll, Columbiana, Harrison, Jefferson, Mahoning, Monroe and Noble with hands-on experience in how the Ohio judicial system works and illustrates how disputes are resolved in a democratic society. The judges travel to hear appellate oral arguments. These are not mock or simulated oral arguments. These are actual oral arguments involving real cases pending before the Court that will lead to a decision from the Court.
The judges enjoy travelling to different high schools, meeting a diverse mix of students, and educating the public about their work. It is beneficial to the students to observe the proceedings so as to learn how this particular Court functions and how to prepare written briefs and oral argument to present to the Court. Cases are chosen by specifically targeting the interest of the students.
